Medical & Physical Exam during autism assessment
When assessing a person for ASD, a medical doctor will enquire about other potential underlying health conditions that could be contributing to or exacerbating symptoms of these conditions. These can include genetic conditions and neurological conditions, such as Tuberous Sclerosis or Epilepsy, which may require further assessment and/or management after the assessment is complete.
To rule out any chemical imbalances that may be contributing to the symptoms of ASD, it might be recommended that blood tests, imaging studies (such as X-Rays), or electroencephalograms (EEG) are undertaken by the child’s referring GP or specialist. However, not all children will require medical investigations of this type.
Medical Assessments will also focus on other important areas of functioning and wellbeing, including the child’s sleep, mood, nutrition, and movement. Any recommended medical investigations, including those listed above, are performed after the assessment and any co-occurring medical conditions identified will be managed by a GP or specialist.
