Possible signs and symptoms of autism in young people include:
· Delayed or atypical development of language and communication skills, such as not speaking or using unusual speech patterns
· Delayed or absent social communication skills, such as not responding to their name, making eye contact, or engaging in conversations
· Difficulty understanding nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions, body language, or tone of voice
· Lack of interest in or difficulty with social interaction and relationships with peers
· Repetitive behaviours, such as hand-flapping, rocking back and forth, or repeating words or phrases (echolalia)
· Preference for routine and sameness, becoming upset by changes to their environment or schedule
· Difficulty with sensory processing, such as being sensitive to sounds, textures, or lights, or seeking out certain sensations like spinning or touching objects
· Unusual preoccupations or interests, such as obsessing over certain topics or objects
· Difficulty with imaginative play, using toys or objects in unusual ways or not engaging in pretend play
· Finding joining in conversation and reading social cues difficult.
· Taking things literally. For example, if someone says ‘oh that’s a piece of cake’ or ‘you’re barking up the wrong tree’, finding it difficult to know what they mean.
· A preference for highly specific interests or hobbies that they spend a lot of time on.
